| Name: | Charles Emerson Winchester III |
|---|
| HISTORY |
Charles was born in Boston to wealthy parents as the oldest of three siblings. He had a younger brother that drowned when he was young, leaving a permanent mark on Charles and causing him to be extra protective of his younger sister, Honoria. His brother's death also leads Charles to be very curious about death and dying, even later in his life. Honoria is a bit of a soft spot for Charles, her own troubles with a speech impediment leading him to show uncharacteristic compassion toward a young soldier with a similar impediment that came through the 4077's unit. He displays his usual arrogance, however, when Honoria announces her engagement to a Catholic Italian man, someone that a wealthy Protestant such as Charles finds offensive and beneath him and his family. Charles attended private prep schools until his acceptance at Harvard for both undergraduate and medical school work. He did his residency at a prestigious hospital in Boston and was subsequently drafted into the Korean war, where he served as a surgeon in Tokyo. Tokyo was a bright spot for Charles, the culture and wealth of that city perfectly suited to him and his tastes. He came to the 4077 after the abrupt departure of Major Frank Burns, having won over $600.00 in a cribbage match and subsequently insulting the superior officer he won it from. He does and always will view the 4077 as a temporary purgatory for his sin in this matter and always treats it with an air of disdain. He truly believes he will get back to Tokyo and his cushy life someday and the 4077 is penance along the way. He spends most of his time listening to opera and reading fine books while enjoying the special treats from home that his mummy and daddy send, a carryover from those prep school days. He also enjoys writing and dictating long letters to his sister, Honoria, and uses these as his connection to Back Bay Bostonian society even while serving in Korea. He enters Portal shortly after the events in the episode "Dreams." |
| PERSONALITY |
When describing Charles, the first word I would use is pompous. Throughout canon, Charles' blustering mannerisms build up a wall between him and his fellow surgeons in the 4077, even to the point where the others (BJ and Hawkeye) find it a personal mission to torture him. He is easily riled, displaying a temper that is belied by his desire to be a genteel and cultured man, unlike the lower breeds such as Pierce and Hunnicutt. His pompous attitude is accompanied by a crippling arrogance. Charles is quick to remind everyone that he is Bostonian royalty, even putting his patients in jeopardy at times in order to save face. This has actually happened twice in canon, once when a reporter desired to interview him about his surgery successes and once when he desires to best a female surgeon he doesn't see as an equal. Despite these obvious character flaws, Charles is a capable and intelligent surgeon, having practiced in Tokyo before coming to the 4077. Unlike his fellow surgeons Pierce and Hunnicutt, he brings a slow deliberation to his practice, taking time to notice tiny details. This, I believe, is born of Charles's deep appreciation for beauty and balance through art, food and music. In all things, Charles desires to float through life on a path of elegance and ease. This desire for elegance leads me to another point in Charles's personality: his manipulative streak. In order to have the upper hand with his colleagues (which he doesn't see as equals, ever), Charles will employ some of their underhanded methods in order to have a position of power. He enjoys doing this mainly through the use of money which, in Korea, doesn't have as much clout as it would back home. However, this does not stop him from flaunting his own wealth through special treats from home that the others members of the unit are not privy to, such as the snowsuit sent to him from his family when the weather turned cold. In short, Charles is arrogant, manipulative and pompous, but he will work just as hard as anyone else when it comes to surgery. His drive to succeed and be the best at everything pushes him to pull his weight and then some in the unit, a surprising quality in a rich son of Boston who used to serve in that pearl of the Orient, Tokyo. |

| CURRENT CONDITION |
Charles has Korean Hemorrhagic Fever, which is now know as hemorrhagic fever with renal symptoms. Symptoms of HFRS usually develop within 1 to 2 weeks after exposure to infectious material, but in rare cases, they may take up to 8 weeks to develop. Initial symptoms begin suddenly and include intense headaches, back and abdominal pain, fever, chills, nausea, and blurred vision. Individuals may have flushing of the face, inflammation or redness of the eyes, or a rash. Later symptoms can include low blood pressure, acute shock, vascular leakage, and acute kidney failure, which can cause severe fluid overload. The severity of the disease varies depending upon the virus causing the infection. Complete recovery can take weeks or months. [disease information taken from the CDC] |
